Lucia LaVilla-Havelin designs and creates one-of-a-kind fiber art pieces using needlepoint, embroidery  and beading. 

Her work explores science and nature, and the interaction of humans with the natural world.

Technique

Each of my pieces begins with an idea and a drawing. I transfer my drawing to needlepoint canvas or fabric and stitch with cotton thread. Then I embroider, over-stitch, and bead to add focus and texture the image. The piece is then machine-appliqued to silk fabric or ordinary household objects, such as placemats, tea towels or napkins. My work celebrates life and beauty, even as it confronts issues in today’s world. I take traditional “women’s work ” and use it to explore contemporary themes.
